Flag Day Ceremony
Flag Day Ceremony Planned for June 14
Since September 11, 2001, and now that our country is at war, we have seen a renewed sense of patriotism. American flags on the fronts of homes are more in bloom now than springtime flowers.
Over time, some of these flags will begin to look a bit worn and tattered. As these flags are replaced, what happens with the old flags? Many people do not know the proper method for disposing of old, worn, American flags. Many would be surprised to learn that the preferred method is to burn these flags in a respectful setting.
The Bellevue Police Department has set up a program to help honor our country’s flag, and to ensure that worn flags are properly disposed. Any citizen may bring an old American flag to the Police Department for proper disposal. A special cabinet has been placed inside the city building where worn flags may be deposited. The cabinet was donated by Cherrycreek Cabinet Designs, 300 Walnut Street, Bellevue, KY (www.cherrycreekcabinets.com). We will properly fold these flags and store them in a respectful manner until Flag Day (June 14th) each year.
On Flag Day each year, we will hold a public ceremony at the Bellevue Beach Park. On that day, the flags at the park will be replaced during a reverent, public ceremony that will include an honor guard and a prayer for our country. The worn flags will then be transported to a private location and will be burned in a respectful setting.
Sgt. Lee Estepp has volunteered to serve as the coordinator for this event. He will be responsible for storing the worn flags brought to the police department and for organizing the Flag Day ceremony. If you wish to assist in this event or if you have any questions, you may contact Chief Cole at cole@bellevueky.org, or Captain Estepp at lee.estepp@bellevueky.org. You may also stop by the Police Department or call us at 859/261-1122.
Do you need an American flag for your home? You may purchase one at the Bellevue Police Department. Two different styles are available. Both styles are durable nylon 3x5 flags. The nylon print flag sells for $12.00. The sewn nylon flag with embroidered stars sells for $25.00. The proceeds from the sale of these flags goes to the COPP fund, which funds programs such as Shop-With-A-Cop and other public safety programs.
